Inventory of Bee Families and Species
The Inventory of Bee Families and Species is significantly different than the other inventories used with the Nature Guide's plants and animals. First, all families and species are listed by their scientific name, not their common name. Unlike most plants and animals listed in the Nature Guide, many bee families and species do not have common names. Bee families often have multiple common names; in many cases common names are applied to a family based on some of the common names used with genera that comprise the family. Family Apidae is an example of this approach.
The majority of individual bee species do not have common names specific to the species. Instead, many species simply use the genus name or in some cases a family common name. All nine species of mining bees listed in Genus Andrena are collectively called mining bee.
In addition to the different structure used with the Bee Inventory, each species listing is a link to a URL address from Discover Life, an on-line website dedicated to providing information pertaining to the identifi-cation of over one million species of living organisms (see Database in Bee section of the Nature Guide for a complete discussion of Discover Life).
For information pertaining to a bee family, click on the scientific name for the family (e.g., Apidae). For information pertaining to the specific species of bee comprising a bee family, click on the scientific name (e.g., Apis mellifera).
