Pokeweed (Family Phytolaccaceae)

Phytolaccaceae is the botanical name for a family of flowering plants

in Order Caryophyllales. It is commonly known as the Pokeweed

Family. Family Phytolaccaceae is a small family, comprised of about

16 genera, totalling a hundred species.

Family Phytolaccaceae species can be found in temperate, subtrop-

ical, and tropical North America, West Indies, Central America,

South America, Asia, Africa, Pacific Islands (Hawaii), Australia.

Many folk medicinal uses have been subscribed to members of fam-

ily Phytolaccaceae and a few members are cultivated as ornamentals.
