Witch-hazel (Family Hamamelidaceae)
The Hamamelidaceae is a family of flowering plants in the order
Saxifragales, including 27 genera and about 80-90 species, all shrubs
and small trees.
Species of Hamamelidaceae are found in temperate to tropical regions,
eastern North America, Mexico, Central America, eastern Asia, Africa
(including Madagascar), Pacific Islands, and Australia.
Several genera of Hamamelidaceae include species planted as ornamentals
(Hamamelis and Corylopsis) while another, Liquidambar, is an ornamental
hardwood of commercial importance. One species, Hamamelis virginiana,
is famous for products used in skin cosmetics, shaving lotions, mouth
washes, eye lotion, ointments, and soaps.
